The Nightmare Before Halloween is too a Christmas movie!!
(and yes, I do realize that this is the Marilyn Manson cover of it. But it's pretty awesome.)
As I say every year, I'm not a fan of the holidays at all. I'm not christian, so the whole "jesus' birthday" thing means nothing to me. I'm not pagan, so I don't celebrate Yule. I'm not Jewish so I don't celebrate Hanukkah, and it would just be outright strange for me to celebrate Kwanzaa. So essentially, the December holiday is nothing more than a Hallmark holiday for me, much the same way Valentines day, Easter or Mother/Father's day are.
I don't really buy into any of the holiday things either. IF I should ever have children, I won't encourage the notion of Santa. I find the entire concept rather disturbing. "He sees you when you're sleeping, he knows when you're awake. He knows if you've been bad or good." uhh... What? Sounds rather stalkerish to me! And even growing up I wasn't much of a fan of the idea of a strange man breaking into my home while we're asleep to leave presents. Even as a child, I questioned how Santa could get into everyone's house in one night. After all, I'd been traveling between the US & the UK since I was 8 months old. I knew it took at least 7 hours to get from one to the other. So how did he get around the world so fast? Was he flying on concord or something?! I also didn't understand why there were so many Santas around- after all, wasn't there supposed to only be one? And the excuse of "he's magic" never flew with me. But my family never really encouraged belief in fantasy characters such as Santa, the Boogie Man, the Monster under the bed, etc either. And that whole taking photos at the mall with Santa or the Easter Bunny was an absolute no-go. I hated them and I still can't stand people dressed up where I can't properly see their faces. I also feel like Santa encourages materialism in children. I'm a very minimalist person- I'm not interested in owning much, just the things I need. I'd rather teach my children that xmas is a time for being around friends & family, and helping those in need. Obviously, they'll learn to respect other's belief's and they'll be taught not to tell people that Santa doesn't exist but rather to say that it's simply not what they believe in.
Today has been spent wonderfully. I had an amazing evening last night with a lovely young man who took me out for drinks & then back to mine for more incredible conversation until the wee hours of the morning and yes, it was JUST conversation! then after half a day of sleeping oh what bliss! I haven't slept like that all week! I've had a horror movie and alternative lifestyle documentary marathon and cleaned the apartment some. I haven't changed out of my pajama's all day. It's been amazing! Tomorrow, my dad and I are going to see "War Horse" and out for dinner. I have no idea where we're going, but I'm pretty sure I'll be happy with anything so long as I'm not the one having to cook! I think I may even make this a new tradition for myself- the idea of celebrating xmas eve with horror movies & mexican food every year sounds pretty awesome to me.
So, whatever you choose to celebrate, I wish you all a very Happy Holidays. Stay safe, warm and don't eat too much!
